Job Purpose
The Statutory Accountant is responsible for ensuring that all Turkey legal entities meet their statutory accounting, financial reporting, audit and regulatory compliance obligations. The role will oversee the preparation of statutory financial statements, manage external audit processes, support tax compliance activities and ensure adherence to Turkish requirements and relevant accounting standards.
The successful candidate will work closely with Group Finance, Tax, Treasury, Legal and Shared Service Centre teams to ensure accurate financial reporting, strong governance and timely filings across the Turkish entity portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
Statutory Reporting
- Prepare annual statutory financial statements for Turkish legal entities in accordance with applicable Turkish accounting and reporting requirements.
- Ensure all statutory accounts are completed accurately and filed within regulatory deadlines.
- Review trial balances, supporting schedules and statutory adjustments.
- Prepare reconciliations supporting statutory financial statements and audit requirements.
- Ensure all significant transactions are appropriately reflected in local financial statements, including:
- Intercompany transactions and balances
- Corporate restructurings
- Financing arrangements
- Lease accounting
- Fixed asset accounting
- Provisions and contingencies
- Maintain audit-ready documentation and statutory accounting files
Turkish Tax Compliance
- Manage and coordinate Turkish corporate income tax, VAT, withholding tax and other local tax compliance requirements.
- Review tax returns and supporting calculations prepared by internal teams or external service providers.
- Ensure tax payments are made accurately and within statutory deadlines.
- Reconcile tax balances between the trial balance, tax returns and statutory accounts.
- Monitor changes in Turkish tax legislation and assess potential business impacts.
- Support tax audits and inquiries from local tax authorities.
- Maintain compliance calendars covering all filing and payment obligations.
E-Ledger and Local Compliance
- Coordinate monthly e-ledger compliance activities for Turkish entities through our global teams.
- Oversee preparation, validation and submission of electronic ledgers and statutory records.
- Liaise with external providers regarding e-ledger uploads and compliance requirements.
- Maintain supporting documentation and ensure compliance with Turkish electronic bookkeeping requirements.
- Support local regulatory reporting and record-keeping obligations.
Audit Management
- Serve as the primary finance contact for statutory audits.
- Coordinate audit requests, PBC schedules and supporting documentation.
- Manage relationships with external auditors and advisors.
- Resolve audit findings and ensure timely completion of all statutory audits.
- Support implementation of recommendations to strengthen controls and compliance processes.
Financial Control & Compliance
- Review balance sheet reconciliations and investigate unusual or unreconciled balances.
- Validate statutory and tax-related journal entries.
- Ensure compliance with internal control and governance requirements.
- Maintain statutory compliance trackers and filing calendars.
- Identify compliance risks and escalate issues appropriately.
- Support legal entity governance and company secretarial activities where required.
Process Improvement
- Drive standardisation and automation of statutory compliance processes.
- Improve documentation, controls and compliance monitoring.
- Support ERP implementations, finance transformation projects and regulatory change initiatives.
- Develop and maintain process documentation, checklists and compliance procedures.
- Partner with Shared Service Centres to improve the quality and timeliness of financial data.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential
- Qualified Accountant, Certified Public Accountant (CPA), SMMM or equivalent professional qualification.
- 3-7+ years' experience in statutory accounting, tax compliance, external audit or financial reporting.
- Strong understanding of Turkish statutory accounting and tax requirements.
- Experience preparing statutory financial statements and supporting external audits.
- Practical knowledge of:
- Corporation Tax
- VAT
- Withholding Tax
- E-ledger compliance requirements
- Strong reconciliation and analytical skills.
- Advanced Excel and financial systems experience.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
